      | Job Duties  |  
      
        The Registered Nurse at the East Carolina University Student Health Service is charged with the provision of patient care to the students of 
        ECU. This involves working in collaboration with other nurses, medical providers, lab and other support staff to provide quality care in a positive, professional and safe environment. The Registered Nurse will strive to meet the patient's needs including: emotional care, relief from discomfort, administration of hydration and medicinal therapy, and patient education. The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care through the use of the nursing process under the supervision of the Nurse Manager. The Registered Nurse will report to the Nurse Manager.
         
         
        Nursing duties (90%): The Registered Nurse perform professional duties through assessment, planning, implementation of evaluation, education and counseling of patients in accordance with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act, 
        ANA College Health Nursing Practice Standards, 
        SHS guidelines of Nursing Care, 
        SHS Policies and Procedures, provider's orders, and instructions form the nurse manager and/or Director of Clinical Operations.
         
         
Nursing duties include:
         A. Identify and document patient's needs.
         B. Prepare student for exam or procedure.
         C. Anticipates provider's needs and have needed supplies available.
         D. Assist provider with exam/treatments as needed.
         E. Administer medication as ordered by provider.
         F. Orient patients to services at 
        SHS.
         G. Provide follow up instructions and counseling to students regarding prevention, treatment and medication.
         H. Provide documentation of individual patient care through nursing interviews, nursing discharge, and the utilization of 
        SHS forms.
         I. Recognize changes in patient status and appropriately communicate verbally and in writing to the provider.
         J. Identify learning needs of patients, their families and friends.
         K. Assist in setting goals for assessed needs.
         L. Implement and evaluate care and teaching.
         M. Accurately assess, plan, and intervene in the care of patients seen in the Urgent Care area based on Student health Service Nurse Assessment Protocol. This involves triaging of patients according to the acuity of their health problem.
         Patient care is initiated by the triage nurse in all triage categories (acute, same day, appointment and nurse visit) based on nursing judgment and needs of the student. If patient fits into the "nurse visit" category, the nurse will be the health care provider for the particular visit. The position will formulate the nursing diagnosis, provide health care based on the Nursing Assessment Protocol, educate the patient on the use of the self care clinic, review health care instruction sheets for specific complaints, obtain appropriate specimen when necessary, and instruct student of self evaluation of effectiveness of treatment received.
         N. If needed, the Registered Nurse will function as the rapid care nurse. 
1) Administration of allergy vaccines per allergist's instructions to include assessment, education and consent. 
2) Recognize allergy vaccine reactions requiring immediate and or emergency intervention.
         3) Administration of immunizations and vaccines with consent.
         4) Repeat BP's and specimen collection (throat and urine) per provider specifications.
         5) Function in the role of employee health nurse for 
        SHS by monitoring 
        SHS employee's needs for annual vaccination and or immunizations.
         6) Organize outreach programs.
         7) Administration of injectable contraceptives and other prescribed cyclic medications.
         O. Rotates as telephone triage nurse:
         1) Triage patient's calls and other related calls using approved protocols and/or provider consultation.
         2) Advise appropriate process of health care access at 
        SHS.
         3)Refer patients to appointments or for an on site evaluation through Urgent Care.
         4) Provide education relation to preventative and palliative measures.
         5) Refer emergency calls to 911.
         6) Document calls including assessment, plan of care and/or instructions given.
         7) Assists appointment secretary and/or receptionist as needed in guiding patients on how to appropriately access care at the 
        SHS.
         8) Manage and directs calls from outside offices and pharmacies appropriately.
         P. If needed, functions as the tracking nurse.
         1) Refer to job description and work plan for detail.
         Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory
         Participate in maintaining annual inventory record for unit.
         Maintain supplies in the assigned area.
         Participate in checking emergency equipment, narcotics and keeping log as assigned.
         Other Responsibilities
         A. Provide feedback to the nurse manager on day-to-day activities.
         
         
        Accuracy in work (10%): Precision, exactness, and accuracy are critical in providing patient care and in communicating with staff. This is essential to ensure that proper care is rendered to patients during their visit at Student Health Service.  |
