Description

The assistant director of the first-year programs will design and implement programs to promote the holistic success and retention of first-year students and support activities and programs to improve student persistence. The assistant director will oversee first-year and transition programs to improve undergraduate retention and graduation rates by creating proactive programs and services to empower students to succeed academically, emotionally, spiritually, and personally. This position will work collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Student Success and Wellbeing, the Orientation Collaboration Committee, the Academic Success Center, and the Center for Vocational Discovery to create synergistic programs to promote the overall well-being and success of first-year students.

The Assistant Director of FYP will provide a broad range of services to ensure first-year students' retention, success, and completion through academic monitoring and referral to academic counseling, guidance, engagement opportunities, and programming, and other appropriate support services.

The administrative assignment will include day, evening, weekend, and/or off-campus work and/or hours.

Roles and responsibilities:



  • Assist in the expansion of the college's first-year support program.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and coordination of high-impact practices and targeted activities to eliminate opportunity and achievement gaps and improve participating students' academic success, persistence, and completion.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director and Dean of Student Success and Wellbeing to create an orientation experience that prioritizes the transition of new students to campus through New Student Orientation and QuestWeek each year.
  • Develop an expert knowledge of the Lipscomb first year experience, beginning with the recruitment process, admission into the University through QuestWeek into their first year as a student.
  • Support the execution of NSO and QuestWeek during program days.
  • Support and enhance early intervention strategies for first-year students through extensive interaction and collaboration among the Student Care Coordinators and Academic Success Center staff, specifically through the Stop Light Assessment during weeks 6 and 13 of the fall semester..
  • Collaborate with the Compass course and Freshman Assembly to promote first-year specific as well as campus-wide events to increase engagement among first-year students. Develop and implement programming each semester, including workshops and events designed to increase and support student engagement, retention, and success.
  • Partner and collaborate with the various offices across campus to develop first-year programs.
  • Develop, implement, and assess the efficacy of various first-year student programs, publications, social media, and initiatives and interventions.
  • Establishes collaborative partnerships and relationships with key stakeholders across the Lipscomb community to assist in facilitating programs for students and families.
  • Develop and maintain a communication plan and messaging for communications to first-year students using multiple platforms, including the first-year monthly newsletter and the First Year Instagram account.
  • Demonstrates proactive engagement by consistently seeking clarification and asking insightful questions about the role and programmatic details, thereby enhancing their ability to perform effectively and contribute to team success.
  • Pattern with SGA to utilize Freshman Leadership Council to plan, implement, and assess first-year student needs and programs each year.
  • Oversee budget expenditures and the establishment of systems, collection of data, and maintenance of records necessary for budget audit trails, project evaluation, and reporting requirements.
  • Developing written materials and reports on the implementation of first-year programs and presenting at campus committees, departmental meetings, and workshops.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
