The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a structural inspector to join our field team. In this hybrid role, you will support the Engineering & Design business unit on a variety of structural inspection projects, including general condition assessments, detailed inspections, report writing, and construction observation. Assignments will involve travel to project sites, typically for weeks at a time.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: assist with developing pre-inspection and safe work plans, prepare daily safety worksheets, and set up/tear down inspection equipment. Conduct visual and physical examinations of structural components (steel, concrete, masonry, timber) using nondestructive testing techniques. Document site conditions with sketches, notes, photos, and digital tools.

  • Communication: compile field data into formal reports, prepare AutoCAD drawings to document findings and identify areas needing repair, and perform calculations to assess structural conditions. Provide concise status updates to project managers and stakeholders.

  • Interpersonal savvy: effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives while fostering strong, productive working relationships.

  • Travel: willingness to travel and adjust personal schedule to meet project needs.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: anticipated range of $30.00-34.00 an hour. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as a non-exempt (hourly) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. This refers to splitting time between a Barr office/field site and a home office. This position can be based out of any of Barr's offices.

  • Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (including up to 100% travel and 100% fieldwork expected; project needs will vary seasonally and over time).

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that may include rough terrain typical of construction/manufacturing/rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities and construction sites. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Physical requirements for the role may include:

  • The ability to safely lift and carry equipment weighing about 30 pounds up and down stairs, ladders, and elevated surfaces on a frequent basis.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: two-year technical certificate or three years of experience directly related to the job responsibilities described above including rebar inspection and reinforced concrete construction experience.

  • Software: strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets. Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, civil engineering technology, engineering technology, construction engineering, or construction engineering technology from a program accredited by ABET (aka Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), including courses in concrete materials, design, or construction, PLUS six months satisfactory work experience; or

  • 5 years of work-related experience.

  • Types of certifications:

    • ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector

    • ICC Special Inspector Certifications (Reinforced Concrete, Soils)

  • Verification of compliance with plans, specifications, and codes.

  • Evaluation of concrete construction, subgrade soil strength, and uniformity in the field.

  • Proficiency in appropriate areas of concrete and earthwork construction inspection.
