Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The Automation Engineer I, SNG Plant will be under the direction of the SNG Plant's Technical Lead, provides instrumentation and automation engineering support for the company's 24/7 production and processing facilities that supply gas to the Oahu utility pipeline and its customers. This role is responsible for executing engineering projects related to the design, modification, development, and maintenance of SNG Plant and Logistics facilities, ensuring all work meets safety, technical, budgetary, and scheduling requirements.



Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Project Management: Plans, designs, estimates, and oversees the construction of instrumentation, control, andautomation systems projects.
  • Evaluates contractor proposals and makes recommendations based on cost and quality of proposal.
  • Develops specifications and performance requirements for automation equipment such as instrumentation, operations networks, and control processors.
  • Coordinates with operations, logistics, maintenance, and construction personnel for all field work performed onprojects to ensure the instrumentation and control system is implemented as specified.
    • Tracks project expenditures and controls them within the limitations of the project budget.
    • Tracks project schedule and controls it within the project time frame.
    • Develop and maintain project documentation.
    • Develops and maintains engineering documentation such as loop drawings, termination drawings, design drawings and specifications, design reviews, maintenance procedures, and QA/QC protocols (e.g. FunctionalAcceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing, Installation Qualifications, Operational Qualifications, andPerformance Qualifications)
    • Support debug, operational and performance qualification, and handover to operations.
  • Operations and Maintenance Support
    • Provides specifications and installation guidelines for instruments, instrument systems and analyzers.
    • Assists in a continuous improvement process by identifying new information and control applications thatenhance profitability and reliability.
    • Assists with Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) development and updating as-builts to reflect fieldchanges.
    • Maintains standardized specifications for instrument selection and installation.
    • Provides primary review of vendor/contractor instrumentation design to ensure compliance with plantspecifications and applicable safety codes.
    • Identifies, analyzes, and designs improvements and capabilities for facility, utility, process, and equipmentsystems.
    • Develops and maintains control system maintenance and testing procedures.
    • Provides instrumentation engineering expertise to support investigations, root cause analyses, inspections,and other technical requests.
    • Provides 24/7 instrumentation and control systems support.
    • Collaborates with peers in continuous improvement of technical infrastructure including standards,practices, specifications, procedures, and business processes.
    • Explores new instrumentation technologies for implementation
  • Proficiently designs, implements and tests a wide range of I/O, basic control functions, interlocks, sequences,operator interface, and other control components of the Distributed Control System (DCS).
  • Compiles and maintains DCS project databases, configuration data, and documentation in accordance with standardtemplates and format.
  • Compiles data and prepares reports for various activities such as FEED studies, project design documents, and testdocuments.
  • Utilizes DCS/Safety Instrumented System (SIS) engineering builders to compile and maintain project databases,configuration data, and documentation in accordance with standard templates and formats.
  • Actively participates in project meetings, site visits and/or startups to troubleshoot control and integrationproblems, conduct operator trainings, and tune control loops.
  • Stay informed of changes in relevant industry laws, regulations, technologies, and trends, and recommend technicalimprovements accordingly.

  • Maintains documentation for the hardware architecture of the DCS/SIS, Human Machine Interfaces (HMI's), andProcess Logic Computers (PLC).
  • Uses industrial equipment, electrical and programming knowledge and experience to adapt equipment to specificjob applications.
  • Prepares operating instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and other documentation for project deliverables.
  • Analyzes alternative techniques and methods and recommends changes to equipment or procedures as needed.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, toinclude the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Complies with all applicable corporate and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeepingduties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager


Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Technical School certificate or equivalent combination of related experience and education.
  • At least two years of experience with Instrumentation and Controls such as DCS/SIS, PLC controls, SupervisoryControl and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, pneumatic/electronic I/O devices, analyzers, metering, or anycombination of these.
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated ability with control engineering principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of calibration theories, techniques, and best practices
  • Experience applying industry standards and practices (e.g., ISA standards) relevant to industrial automation design.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related field required.
  • At least four (4) years of experience with Instrumentation and Controls such as DCS/SIS, PLC controls, SCADAsystems, pneumatic/electronic I/O devices, analyzers, metering or any combination of these.
  • One year of project management experience.
  • Good working knowledge of OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM), EPA Risk Management Program (RMP), 49CFR Parts 192 and 193, NFPA 58.
  • Experience in a Union environment.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Valid Hawaii Driver's License
  • Post requisite: HAZWOPER, First Aid, CPR

Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Certification for programming DCS, PLC, etc.
