Job Description

Position Summary
The Fire Marshal provides campus-wide leadership related to fire and life safety policies and regulations. The Fire Marshal is a subject matter expert who ensures compliance with applicable fire codes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive fire and life safety inspections of university facilities including public assembly venues, residence halls, instructional areas, research laboratories, and other specialized operations.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and mitigates fire and life safety hazards unique to a large research university, including the storage and use of hazardous materials.
  • Reviews plans and specifications for new construction and renovation in cooperation with consultants and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Coordinates with Facility Operations to verify inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire suppression, alarm, and detection systems in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Participates in emergency management planning, response, and recovery activities during drills, exercises, and actual emergencies.
  • Leads or assists in fire investigations to determine origin and cause and prepares detailed reports with recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Provides guidance and on-site support for special events. Reviews and approves site plans and the erection of temporary structures.
  • Develops and delivers fire safety training, outreach programs, and awareness campaigns tailored to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Coordinates pre-incident fire and emergency planning with the local fire department, including access control, hydrant locations, and system capabilities.
  • Serves as liaison to local and state authorities having jurisdiction and communicates effectively with all university stakeholders.

Supervision Received
Reports to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety or designee. Works independently under limited supervision and exercises considerable professional judgment.

Shift

M-F 8:00-5:00 and as needed for events

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in related/ relevant area and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Engineering, Safety, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in higher education or similarly complex environment.
Certification as a Fire Marshal and/or Fire Investigator.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $65,000 to $85,000 per year

Grade: GGS-010
