This position is located on the Peoria campus 170 miles southwest of Chicago. (On-Site Work - Not Remote).

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP) educates 265 medical students and more than 300 physician residents and fellows annually. Additionally, it provides clinical care to more than 31,000 patients annually and conducts basic science, clinical and outcomes research. Position Summary
The LPN II is responsible for assisting in the daily activities of the clinic operation, performing a variety of technical, clinical functions in a medical setting. Primary responsibilities include taking vital signs, putting patients in rooms, specimen collection, administration of vaccines, and assisting the physician with treatments. Responsible for recording information in the EMR. Works under the direction of the Physician and/or Advanced Practice Nurse.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teaches patients and families components of health care related to specific disease entities; ie strep, viral illnesses, asthma and other chronic illnesses._x000d_ Triages incoming patient and family calls for illnesses or questions regarding specific symptoms and consults with the physician. Returns the calls to patient and families within a timely manner._x000d_ Records triage notes, phone call information in the Electronic medical record._x000d_ Monitors tests, procedures and referrals entered into the electronic medical record._x000d_ Follows established standing orders to refill prescriptions, order medications and or blood levels for symptomatic patients._x000d_ Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Follows departmental and unit policies and procedures, identifies and reports policy and procedural deficiencies, recommends changes and evaluates new policies and procedures when they arise. _x000d_ Maintains a good working relationship with the physicians, providers, hospitals, patients, families, outside agencies and fellow staff members, presenting in a positive and professional manner._x000d_ Works with insurance companies to pre-certify diagnostic or therapeutic procedures._x000d_ _x000d_ _x000d_
  • Occasionally covers for nurses who are absent due to illness or vacation._x000d_ Assists in training and guidance of new staff_x000d_ Cleans and stocks patient exam rooms. _x000d_ Orders supplies._x000d_ Follows closing procedures for the clinic at the end of the day making sure all phone calls, in basket messages and all patients have left the building._x000d_
  • Takes and records patient vital signs including blood pressure, height, weight, temperature, pulse and respirations. Identifies irregularities in heartbeat or respiration and alerts provider._x000d_ Escorts patients to exam rooms and prepares the patient and room for the physician_x000d_
  • Schedules tests, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures._x000d_ Makes patient referrals to other physicians or outside services._x000d_
  • Assists the Physician or APN with therapeutics or diagnostic procedures including, PFT's, pulse oximetry, gentian violet treatments, suture removals and dressing changes_x000d_ Obtains specimens for diagnostic testing including urine, blood and POCTs._x000d_ Prepare and administers oral medications and intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections including vaccines and antibiotics. Initiates emergency measures for any adverse reaction and report's patient's condition to the provider._x000d_
  • Other duties as assigned_x000d_ Performs duties listed for lower level service as appropriate_x000d_


  • Minimum Qualifications

    1. Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    2. Six months of nursing experience in a health care facility (such as a hospital, nursing home, medical clinic, prison, mental health facility, or closely related facilities).
    3. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
    4. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
    5. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
    6. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.


    Preferred Qualifications
    Experience in pediatrics is preferred.
    Office experience is preferred

    For classes within the professional (01), semi-professional (02), or managerial (03) occupational areas, out-of-state candidates may compete as all other candidates.
