This is a Contract position with a 1 year end date

Applies professional programming concepts for small to medium-sized projects or portions of larger projects. Resolves a variety of programming design and implementation issues. Works on programming assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

We are seeking a highly motivated AI Scientist / Computational Pharmacology Scientist to support interdisciplinary research and consulting projects at the intersection of large language models (LLMs), regulatory science, pharmacometrics, and real-world evidence (RWE). The successful candidate will develop AI-driven systems to support regulatory document intelligence, automated pharmacokinetic modeling, and real-world data analysis for pharmaceutical research and consulting engagements.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $63,700 - $136,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Zhao Lab at UCSF (Department of Bioengineering & Therapeutic Sciences / School of Pharmacy) is dedicated to advancing drug development and regulatory science through state-of-the-art quantitative modeling, simulation, and artificial intelligence. Under the leadership of Dr. Liang Zhao (a former FDA quantitative methods lead), our group develops mechanistic, population, and AI-driven models that influence regulatory decisions, support generic drug development, and integrate real-world evidence approaches. Our research spans pharmacometrics, physiologically based pharmacokinetics, regulatory-grade evidence generation, and the intersection of AI/machine learning with drug development. The lab fosters a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment where computational scientists, pharmacologists, and regulatory researchers work together to bridge methodological innovation and real-world impact.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience
  • Experience with large language models, machine learning, or AI-driven data analysis
  • Strong programming skills (Python required; R and/or Julia a plus)
  • Experience with large language models, machine learning, or AI-driven data analysis
  • Familiarity with pharmacokinetics, clinical data, or biomedical research workflows
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Pharmacology, Pharmacometrics, Biostatistics, or a related field
  • Experience with FDA regulatory documents (IND, NDA, briefing packages)
  • Hands-on experience with PopPK modeling tools (e.g., NONMEM, Monolix)
  • Experience working with EHR or real-world data
  • Prior collaboration with pharmaceutical or biotech industry partners
