Position Summary:

The CMM Programmer II role is responsible for operating, programming, and maintaining Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) to perform precise dimensional inspections of manufactured components. This role ensures that all parts meet required specifications, tolerances, and quality standards, playing a critical part in maintaining product quality and process control.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate and run programmed CMM inspection routines on production and prototype parts.
  • Load parts, establish proper fixturing, and ensure accurate setup prior to inspection.
  • Utilize and maintain proficiency with specialized measuring tools (e.g., optical comparators, micro-harness testers, vision systems) in addition to standard gauges.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) specifications to determine appropriate inspection methods.
  • Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspection of complex parts.
  • Develop, write, and edit CMM programs (e.g., Camio, using PC-DMIS, Calypso) from 3D CAD models to achieve the required measurement accuracy for critical-to-quality (CTQ) features.
  • Optimize existing programs to improve inspection efficiency and accuracy.
  • Set up and qualify CMM probes and styli.
  • Analyze inspection results and compare data against required tolerances.
  • Generate and maintain accurate inspection reports, non-conformance reports (NCRs), and quality records.
  • Communicate inspection results and potential quality issues to the Quality, Engineering, and Production teams.
  • Assist in root cause analysis of dimensional discrepancies.
  • Perform daily and weekly calibration checks and preventative maintenance on the CMM equipment to ensure reliable operation.
  • Keep the CMM environment (machine and granite surface) clean and controlled.
  • Monitor and report any issues requiring professional service or recalibration.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and quality procedures (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100).
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience operating CMM equipment in a manufacturing environment (e.g., aerospace, automotive, medical device).
  • Expert knowledge of GD&T and the ability to apply it accurately in inspection and programming.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing, editing, and debugging programs on at least one major CMM software (e.g., Camio, PC-DMIS, Calypso, Metrology).
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with various measurement tools, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and bore gauges.
  • Strong ability to work with and interpret tight tolerance specifications (often less than \pm 0.0005 inches).
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift and maneuver parts (within safety guidelines) for CMM fixturing.
