About the Job

APEC is the administrative home for the Sustainability Studies Minor, which is jointly run with the Institute on the Environment. The Sustainability Studies Minor immerses undergraduate students in the exploration of real-world problems from a variety of academic perspectives, incorporating disciplines from across the natural, social and applied sciences.
What are the job duties or responsibilities of this position?
The position is a teaching assistant for SUST 3003: Sustainable People, Sustainable Planet during spring semester 2026. The appointment will begin as soon as possible and end on May 24, 2026. This is a timesheet-driven, hourly appointment in the Department of Applied Economics. The supervisor is Dr. Kimberly Byrd.

Duties include:
Grade papers, tests, and quizzes.
Assist with the preparation of class materials: sort, file, collate, design, and distribute or upload to Canvas site.
Set up and operate equipment for classroom or online instruction.
Monitor classes.
Assist in the preparation of content for bibliographies and other informational materials.
Tutor students.
Function as lead worker for less experienced TAs.
Lead educational tours.
Lead exercises in class.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Demonstrated prior experience as a teaching assistant or research assistant work.
Coursework completed in topics related to the course subject matter.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
What are the preferred qualifications for this position?
Prior experience working as a teaching assistant for this course or a similar course in sustainability studies.

The Department of Applied Economics (APEC) supports the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Science's (CFANS) and the University of Minnesota's land-grant mission through its teaching, research, and extension programs. APEC's teaching programs include Bachelor of Science degrees in Applied Economics and Agricultural & Food Business Management, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Applied Economics. Its research and extension focus are broadly defined as Food Systems; Development, Growth, & Trade; Environmental & Resource Economics; and Public Sector Economics.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $16.50-18.50, depending on education/qualifications/experience.
