This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will be a senior member of the Lunar Crew Systems team, with a focus on creating intuitive and efficient crew displays and interfaces for lunar lander operations and vehicle control. The candidate will have a proven track record in product design, user experience, and human-computer interaction in complex, high-stress environments. This role demands a unique blend of strategic thinking, technological insight, and hands-on design expertise to align our products with both NASA and customer requirements, as well as with the stringent demands of space operations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Spearhead the design strategy for crew displays and interaction systems used in the MK2 Blue Moon Lander
  • Conduct extensive user research to understand astronaut needs and iterate on design solutions that enhance mission effectiveness and safety.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, flight software, mission operations, and crew systems teams to integrate design considerations into operational deliverables.
  • Create detailed interaction models, user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes that adhere to program standards and guidelines.
  • Create and maintain detailed design documentation in support of testing and certification.
  • Utilize and advocate for best practices in UX/UI, ensuring that all designs are user-centered and accessible.
  • Align stakeholder vision and technology execution.
  • Stay abreast of advances in space technology and human-system interaction research, integrating cutting-edge concepts into product design when advantageous.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders across disciplines to ensure design decisions contribute to overarching mission objectives.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to internal teams, external partners, and key stakeholders, synthesizing design rationale and research findings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in product design with a strong portfolio showcasing relevant work.
  • Deep understanding of the Human-Centered Design process, UX principles, and interaction design standards.
  • Proficiency in using industry-standard design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, InVision).
  • Strong technical background with an understanding of the constraints and opportunities in designing for space or other high-risk operational environments.
  • Experience in conducting usability testing and other user research methods in simulation environments.
  • Excellent analytical skills combined with a well-rounded understanding of user research methodologies.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills with the ability to articulate design concepts clearly to various audiences.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and driving alignment on design visions and executions.
  • Must be a visionary and strategic thinker who is also able to be hands-on in tactical design tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with a front-end development language such as Javascript or Python.
  • Prior work with governmental or aerospace organizations, particularly familiarity with NASA guidelines, is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG, Section 508, etc.) and experience designing for verious user abilities.
  • Knowledge of space operations and an understanding of NASA standards (e.g., Human Integration Design Handbook - HIDH, Man-Systems Integration Standards - MSIS, etc.) or analogous prior experience working with FAA regulations or aviation-related experience .

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $197,529.00 - $276,539.55

  • Required for Certain Job Profiles: Drivers who operate Commercial Motor Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or combination of power unit and trailer that meets or exceeds 10,001 lbs. and/or transports placardable amounts of hazardous materials by ground in any vehicle on a public road while in commerce, may be subject to additional Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations including: Driver Qualification Files, Medical Certification (obtained before onboarding), Road Test, Hours of Service, Drug and Alcohol Testing (CDL drivers only), vehicle inspection requirements, CDL requirements (if applicable) and hazardous materials transportation/shipping training.

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
