Provides leadership and technical guidance to physicists, dosimetrists, physicians and other healthcare professional to assure safe and effective delivery of radiation therapy. In addition to performing the functions of a Physicist, completes specific clinical tasks assigned by the Director.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Performs day-to-day clinical work of physics staff, which includes, but is not limits to, treatment planning, patient chart check/review, physics support to all treatment modalities, quality assurance of therapy equipment and treatment planning computer systems.
2. Implements acceptance testing and commissioning of treatment machines; carries out measurement and analysis of beam data; establishes procedures for dose calculation.
3. Participates in research and development programs.
4. Participates in the development of new treatment modalities.
5. Assists in developing and recommending the budgets for the physics division to ensure adequate equipment and personnel for the department.
6. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.
7. Assists in developing and maintaining comprehensive quality assurance programs for treatment machines to comply with regulations specified by regulatory agencies, such as Joint Commission, DPH.
8. Collaborates with medical and technical specialists in the development and the conduct of research projects. Participates in appropriate teaching programs.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. MS in physics, engineering or related science field.
2. Board certification in therapeutic radiological physics by ABR (or equivalent).
Preferred:
1. Ph.D. in medical physics (or related science and engineering field).

Experience/Skills:

Required:
1. Minimum 4 years of direct clinical experience in radiation oncology.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Physical requirements include normal manual dexterity, visual acuity as well as normal lifting ability. The ability and willingness to respond to the work situations, which may require evening and weekend work.
