Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The James E. Shepard Memorial Library provide resources and services, which support the University's educational, research, cultural, and public service objectives. This mission strengthens NCCU's mission by providing students (e.g., on-campus, distance, graduate, and professional) with physical space, resources, specialized personnel, and services to engage in teaching and research. The Library and other libraries collaborate with various academic units to ensure the holistic development of NCCU students across academic and professional programs.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide support and assistance to library patrons with daily access to the many resources available at the James E. Shepard Memorial Library. The incumbent will work as a part of the Research and Instructional Services team which includes: Research and Instructional Services, Government Documents and Interlibrary Loan. The person in this position will help with receiving, filing, and shelving library materials and government documents. In addition, the person will assist patrons in locating and accessing library resources, help with weeding our collection, answers and refer questions to librarians as needed, and will check out/in library materials. This position maintains a comprehensive knowledge of library policies and enforces these policies as needed, and works a flexible work schedule that includes both day and evening. The person in this position is expected to provide services at other library locations on campus as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate must possess working knowledge of circulation processes such as check in/checkout; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Word and Excel) Applications; knowledge of shelf reading, shelving, and inventory; knowledge of preparing monthly reports that include monthly statistics, professional development activities and university service; ability to lift 25 lbs.; ability to assist students with the use of library databases and print resources and government documents; train work-study students to work in the Government Documents Department, and comply with regulations pertaining to health and safety; ability to work independently with little or no supervision; to take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion; to learn, interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions; to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving; to plan, prioritize and organize workflow; ability to work flexible schedules; excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills, excellent editing skills; great interpersonal skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals in a high pressure environment.
Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

Required Competency Work Coordination/Planning
Duties
Check-in Government Documents upon arrival (papers, microfiche, maps, and CD-Roms) with a 3 day turn around. Shelve and shift items as needed. Train work-study students to work in the Government Documents Department, and comply with regulations pertaining to health and safety. Prepare monthly reports that include monthly statistics, professional development activities and university service.


Required Competency Communication and Consultation
Duties
Assist students with the use of library databases and print resources and government documents. Answer questions that come in by phone, e-mail, in person, text message and by tweet. Refer students to librarians for research consultations when needed and be in place at the reference desk when scheduled to provide coverage. Provide excellent customer service to all library users (answer questions in a friendly manner, make eye contact with patrons, help patrons find what they are looking for or refer them to other staff members if you are unable to answer their question(s).


Required Competency Staff Development
Duties
Actively participate in professional development activities during the year. Reference staff should participate in at least twelve professional development activities per year, six of the 12 should involve keeping abreast of the latest FDLP policies and procedures.


Required Competency Organizational Awareness and Commitment
Duties
Respect library users, colleagues and administration. Report to work on time and as scheduled (call the immediate supervisor when you are unable to report to work). Report to assigned service desk on time and complete all reports and other projects within the allotted timeframe established.
