Job Details
Summary
The Platform Services IT Manager is accountable for the delivery, reliability, and evolution of enterprise application platforms and backend services. This role owns backend development, quality assurance, and deployment across commercial SaaS, integration platforms, and custom-built solutions. The focus is execution, operational rigor, and scalable development practices.
This role sits at the intersection of application development, data engineering, architecture, and operations and is expected to actively lead technical outcomes, not merely coordinate them.
Primary Responsibilities
- Platform Ownership & Delivery: Own the end-to-end lifecycle (build, test, deploy, operate) for platforms including Salesforce, MuleSoft Partner Manager, MuleSoft Anypoint Platform, Microsoft Power Platform, Power BI, and bespoke solutions. Ensure platforms are stable, performant, secure, and aligned with business needs. Drive consistency in backend architecture, integration patterns, and deployment practices across platforms.
- Backend Development Leadership: Lead backend development efforts, including API design, data integration, automation, and custom solutions (SQL, Python, Azure, etc). Establish and enforce development standards for code quality, performance, security, and maintainability. Review designs and implementations to prevent technical debt and fragile architectures.
- Quality Assurance & Release Management: Own QA strategy across platforms, including automated testing, regression testing, and integration testing. Ensure releases are predictable, repeatable, and low-risk. Define and enforce go/no-go criteria for production deployments. Work with the IT Manager for Product Mgmt to ensure communication and training are deployed for end user adoption.
- CI/CD & Environment Management: Own CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and environment management (dev/test/UAT/prod). Reduce manual deployment steps and eliminate "hero-based" releases. Ensure rollback strategies, monitoring, and post-deployment validation are standard practice.
- Vendor & Platform Governance: Hold vendors and system integrators accountable for deliverables, quality, and timelines. Make pragmatic build-vs-buy decisions and challenge vendor recommendations when they do not align with enterprise realities. Manage platform licensing, usage, and cost efficiency in partnership with IT leadership.
- Security, Compliance & Reliability: Ensure platforms meet security, compliance, and audit requirements. Partner with security teams to implement secure integration patterns and access controls. Drive operational excellence through monitoring, alerting, incident management, and root-cause analysis.
- Team Leadership: Lead and develop backend developers, QA resources, and platform administrators. Set clear expectations, prioritize work based on business impact, and eliminate low-value activity. Build a culture of accountability, documentation, and continuous improvement
Key Competencies
- Technical: Strong hands-on background in backend development (Python strongly preferred). Experience managing enterprise platforms such as Salesforce, MuleSoft, and Microsoft Power Platform. Deep understanding of API-based architecture, integration patterns, and data flows. Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and automated testing. Solid grasp of cloud-native concepts, environments, and deployment models.
- Leadership & Delivery: Proven experience managing technical teams responsible for production systems. Demonstrated ability to move from strategy to execution without losing momentum. Comfortable making tradeoffs and decisions with incomplete information. Strong incident management and problem-resolution skills.
- Professional: Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Low tolerance for ambiguity, recurring issues, or undisciplined execution. Bias toward automation, standardization, and simplification.
