The A-Technician, Cylinder Maintenance role is a critical function within our production facility, focused on ensuring the safety, compliance, and aesthetic standards of all gas cylinders in accordance with stringent Airgas procedures. This position is integral to the overall lifecycle management of our cylinder inventory. Working within a fast-paced, high-volume production environment, the Cylinder Maintenance Technician is responsible for a comprehensive set of tasks that prepare cylinders for re-entry into service. The primary duties include preparation for valving, surface preparation and paint removal and repainting and finishing:
  • Responsible for adherence to company policies including safety and the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Preparation for Valving: Accurately preparing cylinder necks and fittings to ensure a proper and secure seal for new or reconditioned valves, adhering strictly to safety and quality protocols.

  • Surface Preparation and Paint Removal: Executing the necessary processes for complete and effective removal of old paint, rust, and surface contaminants. This may involve blasting, chemical stripping, or other approved mechanical methods to create a clean, uniform substrate for repainting.

  • Repainting and Finishing: Applying new coats of paint, ensuring proper thickness, adhesion, and uniformity. This step must meticulously follow the approved Airgas color coding and formatting specifications to guarantee immediate and accurate identification of the cylinder contents as per industry and regulatory standards.

  • Visually examine all Vertical Gas Liquid cylinders (VGL's) pre and post repair for any damage or leaks.

  • Operates cylinder buffing equipment as required.

  • Performs preventative maintenance on VGL's by testing for the functionality of the components.

  • Performs vacuum functionality and repairs valves, pressure builders, and gages.

  • Documents all maintenance performed each shift using the appropriate tracking log.

  • Staging, banding, and shipping all VGL's that require a new vacuum

  • Maintains inventory of supplies needed to assure continued production with VGL's.

  • Identifies and condemns all cylinders that do not meet Airgas standards. Communicates any immediate concerns with the supervisor.

  • Assists with production and distribution as needs arise, or instructed by manager.

  • Secures all equipment, tools, and supplies at the end of each work day.

  • Handles hazardous materials daily in a safe and approved manner following Airgas standard operating procedures.

  • Arrange for storage and disposal of hazardous waste (paint and paint dust).

  • Airgas associates are expected to act with care, adapt to our environment and engage to trust and grow - core tenets within the Be, Act, Engage framework of employee performance.

  • All employees are expected to perform any reasonable work request that falls within the qualifications but not specifically described.

Required Education:

  • High School diploma or GED (preferred)

Required Length and Type of Experience:

  • Cylinder maintenance in industrial production settings is preferred.

  • Experience using sandblasting equipment, hand tools and additional industrial equipment in a similar environment.

  • Experience with inventory counting and tracking.

  • Ability to operate a forklift and maintain forklift certifications. Additional hand truck equipment may be used.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):

  • No certifications required but must be able to pass training based on 100% testing.
