Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Physical Plant is to maintain the building, grounds, and infrastructure of the UNCW campus so that it is safe, reliable, clean, and attractive. This includes departments such as HVAC, Electric, Plumbing, Landscaping, Housekeeping, Motor Pool, Food Services Maintenance, Carpentry, Paint and Roofing, Fire Alarm and Physical Security and Access and Locksmith Services.

Food Services Maintenance, a unit within the UNCW Physical Plant, provides a number of retail and transportation services for the entire university community. The operations directly promote and support the campus's mission by providing service excellence and operational efficiency to a sustainable campus that is attractive, functional, and, above all, safe.

Food Services Maintenance Operations include:

  • Campus Dining (contracted to Aramark).

  • UNCW Bookstore (contracted to Barnes and Noble College Bookstores Inc.).
  • One Card (ID Card); Parking and Transportation.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Refrigeration and Food Service Equipment Maintenance Technician performs maintenance and repairs on Food Services refrigeration units, both portable and stationary.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Troubleshooting and repairing a variety of food service equipment along with limited repairs to electric and gas appliances.
  • Inspecting all food service equipment as necessary.
  • Interacting with the campus community as an Food Services Maintenance customer service representative.
  • Estimating cost, time, and materials of work and repairs.
  • Maintaining records and retrieving data related to work performed using systems:

    • Prepares reports.
    • Provides instruction as needed.



  • Analyzing and responding appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

*This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions, even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist in the removal of snow, ice or debris as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience

  • Refrigeration certification and two or more years of journeyman-level experience in the refrigeration and food service equipment repair and maintenance trade, along with basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and/or gas systems.

  • CFESA (Commercial Food Equipment Services Association) certification.
  • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience as a commercial refrigeration specialist and food service equipment repair and maintenance technician that demonstrates achievement of a journeyman skill level equivalent to that acquired through completion of a program for refrigeration and HVAC licensure.

Required Certifications or licensure

  • Valid EPA refrigerant certification and documented refrigeration technician certification.

  • CFESA (Commercial Food Equipment Services Association) certification required within two years of service.
  • Valid NC driver's license or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
