In this role, you will support corporate Quality efforts and serve as a Quality resource to delivery groups in the area of subject matter expertise. You will review and report on all Quality activities for project design and construction on a periodic basis in the area of subject matter expertise. You will need to understand design documents and performs precon (preparatory) meetings, first work in place (initial) observations, and periodic (follow-up) observations to ensure compliance with the design documents, submittals, manufacturer's requirements, and best practices. You will promote the use of materials, finishes, and details with excellent long-term Quality performances. You will also work closely with the discipline Quality Improvements Committees to develop and maintain best practices, create standard procedures and enhance construction documents.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Project Quality Planning
    • Mentors and directs Quality Coordinators and Quality SME's in the area of SME
    • Attends periodic QIP meetings when requested
    • Provides technical review during both design and construction on all projects in the area of SME
  • Design Phase
    • Assist design staff in the development of design details and selection of material in the area of SME
    • Perform reviews of the design documents at approximately 30% and 100% to ensure that they conform to Lesson Learned, best practices, industry standards, and Haskell standards in the area of SME
    • Review project submittals in the area of SME expertise
  • Project Quality Assurance
    • Assists, as requested, with the selection and administration of subcontracts for independent project Quality consultants in their area of expertise (i.e. geotechnical, testing laboratories, threshold structural inspection, window wall, roofing system, facade system, etc.)
    • Conducts periodic project reviews/observations of design, and construction Quality processes at key points to assure that plans are being followed and that anticipated Quality outcomes are being achieved in the area of SME
    • Reports Quality deficiencies in the area of SME and recommends corrective action to Project Superintendent, Construction Project Manager, Design Project Manager, and Quality Coordinator. Follows up on corrective action
    • Assists in project Quality related problem-solving and corrective actions in the area of SME
  • Quality Metrics and Continuous Improvement
    • Participates in Lessons Learned Conferences as requested. Works with CEC, Delivery Group DOC's, AE Group Leadership, and discipline Quality Improvement Committees in the area of SME to create and implement actions to improve results
    • Actively engages in the development and creation of Qualigrams and Best Practices
    • Actively participates in the technical development of the Quality Coordinators
    • Performs a minimum of 4 seminars each year to a large audience to improve the quality and technical knowledge of staff
    • Attends a minimum of 32 hours of professional development (in or out of house) to improve your knowledge base
    • Creates and implements, with supervisor input, a development plan to become recognized as an SME (Subject Matter Expert) in additional areas within the company in a specific area of interest related to the quality of work

Education/Experience:

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in architecture, engineering, construction management, or other degree related to the AEC profession with a minimum of 16 (20 if education is HS or GED equivalent) years of technical experience in design and/or construction in an area of expertise with a background in Quality

Specific Knowledge, Skills, License, Certifications:

  • Area of Expertise: Obtain through education or certification recognition area of expertise in one of the following areas - concrete/soils, building enclosure, MEP systems, etc.
  • Certifications
    • A minimum of three (3) of the following:
      • Participation in a national organization in area of expertise, CQM (government), ACI level I, II, ACI National, ICRI, RCI Roofing Inspector, Structural Steel Erector, Soils testing and Mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineering for non-engineers, LEED, Global Quality Certification, and Six Sigma
  • SME (Subject Matter Expert): recognized corporately as a subject matter expert in a minimum of 8 areas
  • Ability to read and effectively interpret building construction documentation and associated reports
  • Ability to conduct effective preconstruction conferences to define Quality standards and inspection procedures
  • Ability to inspect construction progress at scheduled intervals
  • Ability to interface with client's Quality personnel and provides direction to ensure compliance with testing, inspection procedures, and results to on-site Quality Control inspectors
  • Ability to train Quality Staff in the area of SME to ensure consistency in the Quality program
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills to effectively work with others and interact with all levels of management
  • Excellent organizational skills to handle/prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Ability to work with a laptop, tablet (iPad or Microsoft equivalent), and mobile devices
    • Ability to access project information remotely when working outside the office using VPN and/or Citrix. Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
    • Ability to utilize project management controls system software and other applicable construction technologies including basic 3-D model navigation skills utilizing: Navisworks, BIM 360 Glue, or similar
    • Ability to manage/store project photos from tablet and mobile devices to project files
  • Ability to travel to project sites. Travel will be greater than 50%. Ability to be on site full-time for short-term durations
  • Successfully completed or will successfully complete within one year the OSHA 30-hour Construction Industry Outreach Training Program

Environmental Factors and/or Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, and arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
