Job Summary

Under supervision of the Administrative Nurse Manager, guided by the policies of the Medical Center, the LVN Supervisor works independently and has primary responsibility for the supervision of the LVN and/or MA staff. Responsible for supervising the operational, human resource, and clinical competency skills of the medical assistants who work in the practice, including staff schedules and annual evaluations. The LVN Supervisor oversees the clinic flow ensuring an efficient, well-run operation paying attention to room utilization, wait times and provider productivity.

The LVN Supervisor uses advanced operational concepts and objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Regularly works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Develops and oversees the implementation of new clinical programs and processes.
Responsible for supporting the operations of Radiation Oncology at Mission Bay, Mount Zion, Parnassus and Berkley Outpatient Clinics.

This position is responsible for assisting the Directors, Managers and team members with all aspects of the operation, including but not limited to:
Assuring compliance with all regulatory and patient safety goals of each site

  • Develop, implement and monitor compliance for policies and procedures that require standardization across campuses and satellite clinics
  • Maintains close working relationships with support service departments to ensure regulatory compliance in the clinics that meet patient safety and service standards
  • Develop, implement standardization of medical assistant activity and workflow.
  • Train staff and Department Leaders on standard work.
  • Ensures compliance of standard work for medical assistants across sites
  • Implements and rolls out clinic projects including new IT software, new equipment and new processes within UCSF for Radiation Oncology and supports other Adult Cancer Services departments on an ad hoc basis.
  • Lead the administration and management of material resources needed in Radiation Oncology Clinics while maintaining budgetary compliance with guidance of the Nurse Managers and Administrative Directors.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $92,400 - $138,700 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • 2 years related patient care support experience with demonstrated clinical proficiency to mentor team and provide guidance on escalated issues. Related experience includes working as a Licensed Vocational Nurse and/or equivalent combination of applicable experience providing direct care and leadership in a patient care support discipline.
  • 4 years of Supervisory experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Graduation from an approved LVN program
  • Clinical knowledge to effectively supervise LVNs. Skills to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a clinic, center or practice.
  • Working knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Detail oriented, with the ability to apply analytical and critical thinking skills to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and apply effective solutions.
  • Solid interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and problem solving with all levels of management and staff.
  • Skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Strong knowledge of LVN and MA patient care standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations, and internal policies.
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments.

  • Active American Hospital Association (AHA) (BLS) certification.
