Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The missions of BRITE are applied research and workforce development. Its research focuses are drug discovery and health-related research in areas such as neuroscience, cancer, antimicrobials, cardiometabolic disease, infectious diseases, lung disease, and plant genetic engineering. Through the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, BRITE offers programs at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels and provides students with scientific competency and laboratory experience to work in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, or to fully prepare them to pursue advanced studies.
Primary Purpose of Position
The main responsibilities of this position are to assist the Principal Investigator of the BRITE Institute and Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, on educating and training undergraduate and graduate students on the synthesis of biologically active molecules. He/she will maintain, teach and assist students/researchers on using a 500 MHz NMR, LCMS, GCMS and Isco Combiflash Purification System instruments. He/she will also work with the PI on drug discovery and natural products synthesis research projects and assist in manuscript and grant proposal preparations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidates must have a strong background in organic chemistry with demonstrated experience in organic synthesis, asymmetric synthesis, synthesizing biologically active small molecules and natural products. Experience in using analytical instrumentation such as a NMR, LCMS and GCMS is desired. Emphasis is on proficiency in synthetic organic chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, natural products synthesis and good oral and written communication skills in English.

Function Instructional
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The responsibilities of this position involve teaching, research, and services in the Department of Pharmaceutical. In teaching, you will help teach a Bioanalytical Chemistry lab course and educate and train undergraduate students in a medicinal chemistry lab module course and graduate students in their research course. These courses will require you to help maintain, train, and assist students/researchers on using a 500 MHz NMR, LCMS, GCMS and Isco Combiflash Purification System instruments.


Function Research
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
You will be working with the Principal Investigator (PI) on his infectious disease drug discovery research projects. You will be involved in the synthesis of small molecules and the optimization of their biological activity. In addition, you will also assist the PI in manuscript writing and grant proposal preparations.


Function Public Service

You will be involved in outreach activities and duties assigned by the BRITE director.
