Senior Software Engineer

Lead the design, development, quality assurance, rollout, and operation of new features for the MongoDB Atlas database-as-a-service platform. Conduct research and analysis into the implementation and limitations of existing software produced by MongoDB and its suppliers. Investigate and identify the causes of issues experienced by MongoDB customers in their own use of MongoDB software using a deep understanding of MongoDB system architectures. Inventing new systems and improvements to existing systems to improve the Security, Durability, Availability, and Performance of MongoDB software systems. Participate in an operational rotation to monitor and respond to errors in MongoDB systems. Interviewing candidates and coaching junior engineers and interns to evaluate and teach engineering best practices. Telecommuting permissible from anywhere in the US.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or foreign degree equivalent in Cloud and/or Database Software Engineering, or related field and two (2) years of experience in the related role or job offered.

Experience and/or education must include:

1. Production Java 17 Programming Language experience and understanding of web related design patterns (REST APIs, API authentication) to develop secure production networked systems, and associated experience of debugging correctness and performance issues;

2. Direct experience of associated tooling such as testing methodologies and frameworks (JUnit, Cucumber), familiarity with build systems (Bazel), CICD systems, linting systems and code review to ensure high code quality and detect regressions;

3. Frontend development experience in React and Typescript and understanding of the modern browser development environment;

4. Experience of managing and developing systems built on large NoSQL database clusters. Experience of making distributed system correctness tradeoffs (CAP Theorem) and knowledge of possible implementations (Raft, Elections, Eventual Consistency) to design systems with appropriate characteristics for a given problem space;

5. Understanding of cloud provider operations and direct experience of at least one of AWS, Azure, or GCP, with particular focus on the primitives of compute and storage hardware (AWS EC2, EBS or Azure/GCP equivalent), used to identify and remediating performance problems in cloud provider hardware, such as hypervisor issues, disk issues, and network issues;

6. Experience of applying network and data security and cloud provider features (VPCs/VNets, Security Groups, VPC Peering, Private Endpoints) to ensure systems are appropriately secure against modern threats; and

7. Experience of building highly distributed software services and applying good practices in development and deployment (secure coding, logging, auditing, observability, monitoring, and alerting).
