DESCRIPTION

Under the Sports Medicine physician supervision, the incumbent will support the orthopedic practice in the clinic setting by providing patient healthcare, support and education.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon in the OR (Resident Trained Only), including but not limited to assist with positioning and draping; apply routine dressings; apply brace/splints, hold retractors; hold scope; suction; irrigation.

  • Provide direct patient care through rooming patients, clinical evaluation, physical exam, and treatment.

  • Perform medical history on patients, including but not limited to, history of injury or condition, primary or chief complaint, past medical history, and medication reconciliation.

  • Determine appropriate therapeutic treatment and rehabilitation, reconditioning strategies and sets functional goals for the patient.

  • Assist provider with establishing and documenting patient's health care plan and progress.

  • Order entry for diagnostic studies, other referrals and/or medications under the direction of the supervising physician.

  • Perform therapeutic procedures such as wound care, dressing changes, suture removal, prepping for injections, diagnostic ultrasound, cast, splints and/or durable medical equipment (DME) application and removal, supportive hardware adjustments, and fracture reductions. Applies, adjusts and removes manual traction devices and instructs patients in their use.

  • Communicate and educate patients on plan of care, such as inquiries about treatments, therapies, pre- and post-operative care and expected outcomes.

  • Perform administrative and clerical responsibilities necessary for effective and efficient clinic flow.

  • Other responsibilities include assisting with the daily administration of clinic duties such as: returning selected patient phone calls, scheduling patient appointments, entering appropriate information into the Epic EMR, and retrieval of necessary records relevant to the patient visit, equipment/supply management, cleaning/disinfecting the environment and other tasks as assigned.

  • Works independently as assigned, or in collaboration with athletic trainers, physicians, and other staff in delivering healthcare services for patients.

  • Mentor and manage on site education of students enrolled in University supported education programs or any other healthcare professionals.

  • May assist physicians in research as needed.

  • May administer various therapeutic techniques as needed.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

This position is slated to begin in August 2026, with the exact start date to be finalized closer to that time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of an Athletic Training Residency or Fellowship with emphasis in the surgical training before the hire date.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training or related field.

  • Must have Orthopedic Technologist Certification (OTC).

  • Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) certified by the NATABOC.

  • Minimum of two (2+) or more years of experience as a certified athletic trainer.

  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART w/in 6 months of hire date.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact effectively to establish cooperative working relationships with persons of diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels within and outside the university.

  • Strong computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • One (1+) or more years of orthopedic clinic experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
