Engineering Systems Inc. (ESi) is a multidisciplinary engineering and scientific investigation and failure analysis firm. We primarily work with law firms, insurance companies, and manufacturers on small to large-scale projects to answer any technical questions they have. As a firm, our projects can entail investigating major transportation accidents, equipment failures, personal injury claims, and damage to residential or commercial structures. About This Role

This position requires and individual with a background and/or experience in pathology, injury analysis, investigation of cause of death in accidental and non-accidental events, and accident investigation. The candidate will be responsible for planning, directing and coordinating activities of small to large scale client projects as well as supporting projects led by other ESi consultants to ensure that goals and objectives are accomplished within prescribed timing and financial constraints. Work will include investigating accidents, writing reports, review of existing scientific literature and the performance or supervision of analysis and research to obtain and analyze relevant technical data. The candidate will interface with internal ESi consultants and directly with clients, assessing client needs, establishing performance timelines, developing budgets, and explaining complex medical concepts in lay terms. Must be Board Certified in Forensic Pathology. A good publication/presentation record is desired.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluates cause of death and injuries in accident investigations
  • Provides medical/pathology evaluations and analysis in accident investigations, including subject matter input (where applicable) on injury causation, toxicology, pain/suffering, time of death, biomechanics, and human factors.
  • Identifies and reviews existing media (e.g. medical records, autopsies, photographs, video, witness statements, depositions, police and other reports, etc.) to develop preliminary conclusions and plan further investigation.
  • Assists other consultants in conducting inspections of accident scenes and of involved or exemplar machines, safety equipment, consumer products, and other items as needed.
  • Locates, assesses pertinence of, and applies scientific literature, existing test data, governmental regulations, and consensus safety standards.
  • Designs, conducts, and/or participates in testing to obtain and evaluate data for projects.
  • As part of a team, conducts technical evaluations that may include risk assessments or job safety analyses for a variety of products and environments.
  • Prepares written reports of findings and conclusions in clear, concise, easy-to understand terms.
  • Provides legal testimony in a variety of venues, including courtroom settings
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree.
  • Completion of formal residency program in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
  • Completion of formal fellowship in Forensic Pathology

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in at least one State (multiple States preferred)
  • Board Certification in Forensic Pathology for at least 10 years

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 5 - 10 years' work experience in pathology, medico-legal investigation of death, or forensic consulting related to cause of death.
  • Must be currently working in a position performing forensic autopsies on a regular basis.
  • Authoring of high-quality technical reports and/or autopsies.
  • Recent experience as a Medical Examiner or Deputy Medical Examiner in a State or County level Medical Examiner's office or equivalent.
  • Recent experience performing autopsies in a consultative capacity.
  • Experience providing expert testimony is highly desirable.

Computer Skills

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams as well as Adobe Acrobat Professional. Windows Operating System experience highly preferred. Intermediate skills in graphics programs, Internet browsers, and database programs.

Other Skills/Abilities or Other Qualifications

  • Ability to interact with clients in a professional manner and develop business both internally and externally.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and providing expert testimony desired.
  • Must be available to travel occasionally as part of a national practice.
