Mechanical Engineering Intern - Workforce Development

Performance Review Institute (PRI)
United States, Pennsylvania, Warrendale
400 Commonwealth Drive (Show on map)
Apr 16, 2026

SAE Industry Technologies Consortia (ITC), Performance Review Institute (PRI) and SAE International (SAE), deliver shared solutions to industry's common challenges.

Join us and create a higher standard for a better world.

This internship sits within SAE's Workforce Development Strategic Product Line (WFD SPL), the team responsible for aligning industry workforce needs with SAE programs and solutions.

Unlike a traditional engineering internship focused on design work, this role serves as the team's technical and candidate-perspective subject matter resource. This intern will provide grounded insight into what mechanical engineering students learn, what skills employers expect, and how emerging engineers evaluate career opportunities.

You will help ensure that workforce strategies, programs, and industry conversations stay rooted in real engineering skill demands and authentic student experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as the internal "voice of the engineer" in WFD strategy discussions
  • Participate in strategy meetings and help interpret technical workforce needs
  • Provide perspective on relevant curricula, skills, and early-career expectations
  • Validate whether proposed initiatives and programs align with real-world engineering skill development
  • Help translate industry workforce challenges into actionable program ideas grounded in technical reality
  • Help prepare summaries and briefing materials that connect technical needs to strategic decisions
  • Provide occasional support for WFD-related events in order to capture insights to inform future workforce strategy and program design

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field
  • Strong understanding of core mechanical engineering concepts and coursework
  • Interest in how engineering education translates into industry careers
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Hybrid work environment with a mix of office-based and virtual work; remote participation in meetings is common
  • Frequent computer use, including extended periods of typing, video conferencing, and screen time
  • Regular participation in meetings and collaborative working sessions, both in person and virtual
  • Occasional travel may be required to support events (e.g., Collegiate Design Series) or attend internal/offsite meetings
  • During events, may be required to stand or walk for extended periods and move light materials (up to 25 lbs), such as signage or event supplies
  • Use of standard office equipment including laptop, monitors, and collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, Excel)
