The Assistant Custodial Supervisor reports directly to the Supervisor of Custodial Services. This position assists in supervising custodial staff who perform daily cleaning activities in office, classroom, research, and/or residential buildings. The incumbent is responsible for delegating work from the Supervisor of Custodial Services and directing work activities of the custodial staff. The incumbent is also responsible for providing appropriate skills, equipment, and safety training. In addition, the Assistant Custodial Supervisor is responsible for performing cleaning activities as a custodial team member. This position requires the use of operating work issued vehicles.

Work Schedule: 10:30 pm to 7:00 am, Sunday - Thursday

Job Description
35% - Custodial Services Supervision:
  • Assists the Custodial Supervisor in planning, coordinating, and directing the daily work of subordinate custodial staff to ensure cleanliness standards, safety requirements, and service expectations are consistently met.
  • Provides direct and routine supervision of custodial staff, including monitoring daily workloads, tracking progress, and assessing effectiveness of work performed.
  • Identifies training needs and reinforces proper cleaning techniques, equipment use, and safety practices; communicates observations and progress to the Custodial Supervisor at a frequency determined by the Supervisor.
  • Assists in ensuring established work schedules, assignments, and procedures are followed through daily review and inspection of assigned facilities.
  • Conducts quality inspections and ensures timely followup and corrective actions are taken to address deficiencies.
  • In collaboration with the Custodial Supervisor, meets with staff to discuss schedules, work assignments, use and care of equipment, staff development needs, and appropriate responses to unusual or emergent situations.
  • Assists with evaluating employee performance and providing input related to work habits, attendance, and quality of work.
  • Maintains daily communication with custodial staff to support operations and address issues as they arise.
  • In the absence of the Custodial Supervisor, assumes responsibility for assigning work, ensuring service levels are met, and maintaining operational continuity, including responsibilities tied to service level agreements.
40% - Custodial Duties:
  • Performs daily custodial work as an active member of the custodial team to maintain assigned areas at established cleanliness standards.
  • Duties include vacuuming; dry and wet mopping; stripping and burnishing floors; emptying trash and recycling; cleaning, dusting, and polishing surfaces; and cleaning and disinfecting restroom fixtures and surfaces, including sinks, toilets, urinals, sanitary receptacles, and shower stalls.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains entrances and exterior building areas, including removal of debris, snow, and ice, and applying surface treatments as required.
  • Provides additional custodial services as needed in response to staffing shortages, absences, or operational priorities.
  • Supports snow removal and inclement weather response efforts to maintain safe and accessible facilities.
15% - Administrative Support and Operational Coordination:
  • Assists the Custodial Supervisor with administrative functions, including reviewing time and labor records, monitoring attendance, and supporting absence management for assigned staff.
  • Supports the approval and tracking of leave requests in accordance with departmental and university policies.
  • Contributes to maintaining accurate documentation related to staffing, inspections, performance observations, and work assignments.
  • Uses computerized systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, MAXIMO, Microsoft Office applications) to support scheduling, reporting, and operational communication.
  • Communicates operational updates, priorities, and concerns to the Custodial Supervisor to support effective decisionmaking.
  • Serve as part of the emergency phone rotation, responding to urgent calls outside of normal business hours according to established schedules and protocols.
10% - Performs other related work as assigned:
  • Follows safety policies regarding use of supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Performs other duties related to cleaning or maintenance as needed including working at similar tasks in another facility to cover for absent staff or extra staffing needs.
  • Assist Custodial staff as needed with moving appliances and supplies in and out of halls as directed to clean. Reports and turns-in lost items to appropriate persons.
  • Receive any suspicious incident or persons reports and report to KUPD or Complex Director staff.
  • Participates in training sessions and in-service classes or workshops.

Position Requirements
  1. Ability to lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds frequently and the ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally with or without accommodation.
  2. Ability to bend, stoop and/or kneel frequently.
  3. Ability to work on step ladders.
  4. Physical strength sufficient to stand the strain of working long hours at custodial tasks.
  5. Willingness and ability to work overtime as needed.
  6. Willingness and ability to work under a variety of extreme temperature and weather

Required Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or completion of G.E.D. equivalency.
  2. Lead worker or supervisory experience OR a KU leadership course (STEP, Aspiring Leaders, etc.)
  3. At least three (3) years of custodial experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Previous custodial supervisory experience.
  2. Previous experience in a college/university setting.
  3. Knowledge of and experience with the operation, use, and care of vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
  4. Experience interacting with customers and/or the public.
  5. Computer knowledge and skills sufficient to work in Microsoft Office Suite and various other software programs such as People Soft and MAXIMO.
