Definition

Under general and/or immediate supervision from the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, makes minor and major mechanical repairs to gasoline or diesel powered automotive, heavy construction and other power-driven equipment.

Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life: The Mechanic I position requires a CDL with a Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of employment and supports the City of Fontana's fleet of 538 vehicles and/or equipment, including those for the Police Department. The day starts with assignments from the Chief Equipment Mechanic, focusing on preventive maintenance, urgent repairs, and customer service for various city departments. A Mechanic I will be expected to report to work daily, on time, and dressed for work. The Mechanic I will perform multi-level services, change fluids and filters, mount and balance tires, brake and suspension repairs, and minor engine repairs. The Mechanic I will keep accurate and descriptive records using the City's maintenance software. The Mechanic I will perform in-service procedures to prepare vehicles to be placed in service. Along with removing equipment to prepare vehicles going to auction. In addition to vehicle work, they can assist with generator inspections and manage parts inventory, ensuring availability and organization. Vendor interaction includes ordering parts and ensuring quality, along with clear communication with City Departments regarding repair needs and timelines. Throughout the day, collaboration with other team members is key. By the end of the shift, the Mechanic I ensures the fleet is safe, reliable, and mission-ready, demonstrating technical skills, problem-solving, and customer service to support community operations.

Essential Functions

The employee must have the ability to:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance, and construction equipment.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, or oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
  • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
  • Tune up engines, replacing such components as generators, distributors, relays lights and switches.
  • Diagnose and repair computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering and cooling systems.
  • Repair, adjust and replace brake systems including disc, hydraulic and air brakes.
  • Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for the City automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Maintain work, time, and material records.
  • Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer

WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more. The position requires near and far vision when inspecting work. Incumbents work in all weather conditions, use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants, drive motorized vehicles, heavy equipment and work around moving traffic and often works with constant interruptions. The incumbent is also required to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment.


Experience and Training Guidelines

A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The employee must have knowledge of:

  • Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.
  • Operation and care of internal combustion engines.
  • Safe work practices.

Ability to:

  • Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill.
  • Maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience: One (1) year of experience performing routine automotive maintenance and minor repair work.

Education: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, including specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment.

License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment, a California Class "B" License with Tanker Endorsement.
