Description

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for the professional design, construction, and sustainable maintenance of natural surface trails tailored for mountain biking. Unlike general trail workers, this position will focus on technical features like berms, jumps, and specialized drainage to ensure rider safety and trail longevity.

***PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION THAT WILL END ONCE THE SEASON IS OVER. KNOWLEDGE OF BIKE TRAIL CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED.***

Example of Duties

JOB DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:


  • Marking, cutting, and shaping new trails, including "full-bench" trails and technical downhill sections

  • Repairing tread erosion, clearing corridor deadfall, and maintaining specialized structures like wooden bridges, retaining walls, and rock armor

  • Implementing and maintaining complex drainage features like waterbars, rolling grade hits, and French drains to prevent water damage

  • Patrolling trails for hazards, updating signage, and acting as a point of contact for the local mountain biking community and volunteer groups

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

  • Knowledge of International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) standards and other sustainable trail-building principles;

  • Knowledge of the proper use of GPS and GIS software for trail mapping;

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions;

  • Knowledge of recordkeeping principles;

ABILITIES AND SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

  • Ability to use specialized machinery such as mini-excavators, skid steers, and power tools;

  • Ability to use hand tools such as Pulaskis and McLeods;

  • Ability to use related computer programs effectively;

  • Ability to deal courteously with the public;

  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions and take direction well;

  • Ability to properly coordinate and supervise community groups and volunteer activities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Moderate Work: Lifting in excess of 50 pounds frequently

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, dust, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and travel.
