Job Summary

The Quality Improvement Nurse Analyst serves as a patient and safety advocate while performing advanced data analysis, comprehensive patient care reviews, and performance improvement initiatives. This non-patient facing role requires strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, organization, and the ability to effectively prioritize multiple initiatives.

Working closely with the Director of Quality and Safety and the Chief Quality Officer, the Quality Improvement Nurse Analyst leads and supports performance improvement activities aimed at optimizing patient outcomes and proactively identifying patient safety risks. In the absence of the department manager, this role ensures continuity of departmental operations and provides operational support as needed.

The Quality Improvement Nurse Analyst collaborates across the healthcare system to support system-wide quality and performance improvement initiatives, coordinating and contributing to multiple interdisciplinary projects. This position integrates expert clinical knowledge of healthcare delivery systems with evidence-based quality improvement methodologies and tools to promote excellence in clinical outcomes at UC Davis Health.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Valid California RN license without restrictions
  • Successful completion of a bachelor's of nursing degree (BSN).
  • Multiple years of recent experience in acute care and/or ICU/inpatient medical-surgical nursing. Clinical chart review and abstraction experience.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, physician champions, and clinical department leadership
  • Advanced clinical knowledge with >5 years' experience in hospital based patient care.
  • Proficiency in applying performance improvement methodologies for retrospective and concurrent clinical reviews.
  • Ability to analyze data and present clear, actionable recommendations to various stakeholders and leadership audiences.
  • Experience presenting quality-related data to physicians, department chairs, and hospital leadership.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems..

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a master's degree in nursing.
  • Quality experience. Database data entry and/or management experience. Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal direction, exercising sound judgment, prioritizing work effectively, and maintaining accountability while supporting reliable, highquality outcomes.
  • Advanced skill in statistical analysis and presenting complex data in clear, concise, and actionable formats that support transparency and informed decision-making.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify variation, improve resource utilization, and develop action plans that enhance reliability and reduce risk.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills that support a Just Culture, including respectful communication, deference to expertise, and learning from safety events and performance variation.
  • Excellent communication skills to educate and engage physicians and staff on quality measures, patient safety practices, and learning from performance variation.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulatory and accreditation standards, including Joint Commission, California regulations, and performance-based quality programs, with attention to compliance and reliability.
  • Knowledge of medical-surgical and nursing care processes, with skill in identifying risk, assessing necessity of care, and supporting standardization where appropriate.
  • Advanced understanding of hospital and outpatient operations, including use of demographic, financial, and utilization data to support sensitivity to operations.
  • Knowledge of clinical program planning and performance improvement methods, including evaluation tools and change management principles that support resilience and sustained improvement.
