This is a 32 hours per week position and must have the ability to work evenings and weekends.
Summary: Ensures that each customer receives outstanding service by providing a friendly environment, which includes greeting and acknowledging every customer, maintaining solid product knowledge and all other aspects of customer service. Routinely performs and/or assists with selling and stocking in the shop.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greets customers, ascertains customer needs and provides advice in selecting merchandise.
- Opens and closes cash registers, performing tasks such as accurately counting money, processing credit card transactions and balancing cash drawer.
- Stocks merchandise; keeps store floor organized, neat and attractive.
- Sets up advertising signs and displays merchandise on shelves, counters or tables to attract customers and promote sales.
- Assists in maintaining inventory stock room in an organized manner.
- Maintains knowledge of current sales and promotions, policies regarding payment and exchanges and security practices.
- Stamps, attaches or changes price tags on merchandise, referring to price list, when needed.
- Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed: informs employees/students/volunteers of safety guidelines and safe working practices and routinely monitors to enforce them.
- Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards.
- Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
- In supervisor's absence, may be required to oversee shop activities.
- Must be available for weekend hours to support store operations.
- Meets expected attendance guidelines.
- Follows and adheres to established policies and procedures, including but not limited to Employee Handbook, Garden Safety Guidelines and Department Policies.

Qualifications/Experience:
- Minimum of (6) months' experience in retail, customer service and/or sales environment required.
- Proficient knowledge of sales principles, customer service principles and processes required.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels; must enjoy and feel comfortable interacting and working in close proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high volume, retail environment.
- Ability to patiently work with volunteers and provide direction regarding tasks in the absence of a management member.
- Demonstrates highest level of professional and ethical conduct; knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems.
- Must be punctual, dependable, self-starter, and possess the ability to effectively multi-task and work under minimal supervision.
- Scheduling flexibility that allows working some weekends and evenings is required.
- Exceptional demonstrated project management, organizational, time management skills, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills required; ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner.

Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- An equivalent combination of skills, education and experience may be considered.
Computer Skills:
- Experience using Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Outlook, Excel, Word,) and POS knowledge preferred.

- Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written).
Mathematical Skills:
- Requires ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals.
- Must understand U.S. currency and be able to make change.
Reasoning Ability:
- Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Ability to possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must have the ability to pass a background screening and motor vehicle report (MVR) to meet minimum insurance underwriting criteria.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift 35-50 pounds (i.e., load, unload and move merchandise, etc.).
- Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time-- 75% or more of the workday is standing on feet.
- May be required to perform tasks at varying heights (i.e., step stools climb ladders, etc.).
- Ability to effectively utilize computer keyboard (typing) and cash register.
- Requires extensive speaking and interaction with people.
Work Environment:
- Ability to work in fast-paced, team-oriented retail store environment.
- Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner, answering general questions regarding the Garden's operations, events, facilities, etc.
