Job Summary

Works with the lab coordinators to plan, prepare, and clean, equipment, materials, and lab spaces used in weekly and lab activities in teaching and research labs. Helps maintain, clean, and organized teaching labs, research labs, and lab prep facility. Prepares, replenishes, stocks, and cleans supplies needed for lab and research activities in a timely manner without duplication in effort. Maintains, repairs, cleans, and properly stores equipment, or reports when professional repairs are needed. Recommends the purchase of supplies and equipment needed for lab and research activities. Enforces safety regulations. Assists with care and maintenance of the greenhouse, plants, and other live specimens. Maintains preserved specimens. Helps support faculty and students in research labs.

Essential Functions

30% Prepares, cleans, and replenishes supplies needed in teaching labs. Works with the lab coordinators to ensure labs are set up prior to the start of the lab period

30% Promptly cleans labs and properly stores equipment after lab activities are completed. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance on equipment before it is stored

20% Supports faculty and students in research labs, including assisting with supplies and equipment, including stocking, and cleaning

10% Maintains live and preserved specimens in labs and the greenhouse

10% Coordinates and communicates with faculty and other lab staff, and performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and one year of laboratory experience

such as maintaining equipment, facility space, supplies or other resources used for laboratory

purposes in area of assignment.

OR

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience

as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those

listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation,

may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

A. Lab experience in biology.

B. Completion of a college degree in biology, microbiology, biotechnology or other degrees in biological sciences or completion of college level general biology, chemistry, and microbiology. Must provide unofficial transcripts with application to be considered for review.

C. Experience with the use and maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment including microscopes, balances, spectrophotometers, plate readers, autoclaves, centrifuges, glassware washers, or other equipment.

D. Experience with preparation of microbiology media and aseptic techniques.

E. Experience handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials.

F. Experience caring for preserved specimens, cadavers, live specimens and plants.

G. One (1) year of relevant full-time MCCCD experience during the previous two years

Special Working Conditions

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.

Additional Conditions:

Exposure to human cadaver parts.
Requires work in the evenings and weekends with little supervision.
May require travel between campuses.
