East Carolina University is a public doctoral/research university in Greenville, North Carolina, with an enrollment of nearly 27,000 students. It is one of the largest universities in North Carolina. ECU offers 84 bachelor's degree programs, 68 master's degree programs, 13 research doctoral degrees, 6 professional doctoral degrees, the Brody School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine.
The School of Music, in the College of Fine Arts and Communication, has an enrollment of over 200 music majors and minors with over 50 faculty and staff. The school is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
Job Duties
The Coordinator of Audio Services will serve as the chief recording engineer and audio technician in support of the academic and educational programs in the School of Music and instructor of Music Technology courses. This is an 11 month EPS-Non Faculty position.
90% School of Music

  • Serve as chief recording engineer and audio technician in support of the academic and educational programs, ensuring professional production standards across all School of Music activities.
  • Provide consultation to faculty and guest artists regarding recording and sound reinforcement needs and develop workflows that support instructional, recruitment, assessment, and promotional objectives.
  • May provide sound design services for opera productions, theatrical presentations, multimedia performances, and contemporary music events. Responsibilities can include creating and editing sound effects, designing playback systems, programming cue sequences, integrating electronic media into performances, and collaborating with directors, conductors, composers, and production staff to achieve artistic goals.
  • Recruit, train, and oversee graduate and undergraduate students who serve as engineering crews for SRAPAS and School of Music events both on and off campus.
  • Select and procure media and recording equipment and software for the School of Music and its performance spaces. Position typically plays a significant role in identifying equipment needs, researching solutions, developing cost estimates, preparing budget requests, and prioritizing expenditures. Responsibilities may include:

    • Develop multi-year equipment replacement plans.
    • Prepare annual budget recommendations for recording and media technology.
    • Obtain vendor quotes and evaluating competing products.
    • Make recommendations regarding capital purchases.
    • Manage allocated equipment budgets.
    • Track expenditures and ensure compliance with university purchasing procedures.
    • Assess lifecycle costs, maintenance requirements, and future upgrade needs.



  • Provide technical support for opera, jazz, ECU NewMusic, and SRAPAS productions.

    • Design and implement audio reinforcement systems.
    • Configure microphones and wireless systems.
    • Record rehearsals and performances.
    • Create and manage playback systems for electronic media.
    • Support livestreaming and broadcast operations.
    • Operate digital mixing consoles and audio workstations.
    • Coordinate audio requirements with guest artists and production teams.
    • Troubleshoot equipment and software issues during rehearsals and performances.
    • Support multimedia presentations, projections, and electronic music components.
    • Assist with stage communications and backstage audio systems when required.


  • Work with ITCS to ensure the secure and safe management of the streaming servers for web broadcasts of School of Music events which includes all technical and operational aspects of webcasting infrastructure, including:

    • Configure and maintain streaming hardware and software.
    • Monitor stream quality and reliability.
    • Manage streaming accounts, credentials, and access permissions.
    • Troubleshoot connectivity and bandwidth issues.
    • Coordinate event broadcasts and scheduling streams.
    • Ensure compatibility with university and third-party streaming platforms.
    • Maintain archived broadcast files and metadata.
    • Evaluate and implement technology upgrades.
    • Develop contingency plans for technical failures during live events.
    • Train student assistants and other personnel involved in streaming operations.


  • Coordinate with the Music Library to archive School of Music recordings by overseeing the transfer, organization, documentation, and preservation of recorded materials.

10% Music technology instruction

  • Teach course(s) in music technology (MUSC 2280).
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and project assignments of the music technology course(s).

Minimum Education/Experience
Master's degree; or Bachelor's degree in music or performing arts discipline with at least two years of relevant experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Classical music background. Master's degree in a closely related field. Three or more years of directly related technical experience. Ability to function independently with minimal supervision.
