Duties and Responsibilities
The University Chaplain at Loyola University Chicago reports to and works closely with the Vice President for Mission Integration to assist with overseeing the University's Jesuit Catholic mission and identity efforts with both internal and external constituencies. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as the canonical chaplain and rector of Madonna della Strada Chapel working with the Director of Campus Ministry, Campus Minister for Liturgy and Catechesis, and Jesuit Community to ensure a vibrant worshipping community. Responsible for all sacramental record keeping, with assistance provided by the Office Operations and Hospitality Manager.
  • Participate as a member of the leadership team of the Division of Mission Integration.
  • Assist in the University's efforts to promote a deeper understanding and integration of the Catholic intellectual tradition, Catholic social and moral teaching, Ignatian pedagogy, Ignatian spirituality, and the like.
  • Serve as a liaison between the University and the Jesuit community in matters of mission integration.
  • In cooperation with Campus Ministry team, provides pastoral outreach and care to students through (for example) prayer leadership, vocational discernment groups, retreats, response to wellness calls, and spiritual direction.
  • Serves on the Mission and Culture Committee and attends all meetings of the full Board of Trustees.
  • Serves on the Jesuit Recruitment Committee assisting in identifying and recruiting Jesuits to study and work in various capacities at the University.
  • Supports the Division of University Advancement, as requested, in the promotion of mission-related activities and efforts.
  • Represents the University to external constituencies as requested by the president or vice president for mission integration.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned


Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Master's degree in theology or a social science-related area and two years of ministry experience. Must be a priest of the Society of Jesus.

Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader with experience in Catholic and Jesuit higher education. Characteristics sought include:

  • Diplomatic and collaborative partner, capable of bringing together diverse groups of constituents
  • Effective problem solver
  • Person of wisdom and experience, capable of providing counsel and advice to University leadership.

Validly ordained Roman Catholic priest in good standing, preferably a Jesuit.
