THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position you will learn what it takes to help raise healthy fish to stock Pennsylvania's waterways so that people can enjoy better fishing opportunities statewide. Our team will train you on the knowledge, skills, and actions needed to deliver the fish in excellent condition. As a Fish Culturist 1, you will learn and perform the following duties:

  • Care for Fish: Handle fish in a way that minimizes stress, injury, and mortality; identify different species and types of fish; and load, transport, and monitor fish
  • Handle Spawning: Collect, fertilize, and care for eggs; monitor and track important data on fish development
  • Support Healthy Conditions: Set up, operate, and clean incubators, inside tanks, and outside raceways; monitor and report water quality, flow, and other information
  • Use Specialized Equipment: Safely operate a fish-stocking vehicle, feeding systems, and other specialized tools involved in fish care
  • Keep Accurate Records: Perform simple math calculations to figure out how many eggs or fish are present; report information about fish feeding, growth, health, and behavior
  • Maintain Facilities: Perform repairs and maintenance to hatchery buildings, equipment, and grounds

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Seasonal, full-time employment.
  • This position does not receive medical benefits. Paid time off accrues after working 750 regular (non-overtime) hours in each calendar year.
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. This position may require some weekend, evening, and holiday work as well as standby time.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent certification of formal training.

Special Requirements:

  • You must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License.
  • Employee entering this classification must obtain a Commercial Driver's License that permits the operation of vehicles of 26,000 lbs. or more prior to completing their probationary period.

Other Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

  • A conditional offer of employment will require a drug screening.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
