THE POSITION

The Veterinary Medical Field Officer position with the Department of Agriculture offers a meaningful chance to protect animal health across Region 5. This role allows you to work closely with farms, veterinarians and industry partners to support safe and healthy agriculture. You will utilize your strong field skills while helping prevent and manage animal diseases. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role supports statewide animal health by inspecting regulated operations, conducting investigations and guiding disease prevention efforts. It strengthens agricultural safety through direct field work, collaboration and education. As a Veterinary Medical Field Officer, you will perform the following duties:

  • Facility Inspections: Inspect regulated entities, verify compliance, and document required findings
  • Disease Investigations: Conduct investigations of dangerous transmissible diseases and enforce appropriate quarantines
  • Sample Collection: Collect and submit biological samples following proper diagnostic and biosecurity procedures
  • Community Outreach: Provide education to producers, veterinarians, and the public on disease prevention and regulatory requirements
  • Emergency Response: Support incident management activities including disease control and depopulation when required
  • Staff Supervision: Guide and support Domestic Animal Health Inspectors to ensure consistent regional program performance

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is based at the home headquarters located in Region 5, which includes the counties of Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Centre, Clearfield, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, and Somerset. You will be expected to travel in the field for this position.
  • This position is home headquartered. In order to be home headquartered, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.

  • Salary: The Veterinary Medical Field Officer Position is a challenging and exciting position that comes with a base salary that is negotiable up to $136,842.00. The position is also eligible for a performance incentive of up to $5,000 yearly once in regular status and if the selected candidate is board certified there is an additional quarterly payment as part of the compensation package.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of professional experience as a veterinarian and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or a Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) from an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited college or university.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
  • All positions require possession of an active license to practice veterinary medicine as issued by a State Board of Veterinary Medicine.
  • All employees must obtain an active license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Veterinary Medicine within six months of hire.
  • All positions must obtain United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Category II Accreditation within six months of hire.

Other Requirements:

  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
