What to Expect

As a Cost Controls Specialist, you will play a critical role in optimizing and controlling the total cost management program on in-house megapack, solar, supercharger and semi charger projects. You will be responsible for monitoring and managing the Total Cost Management program, including cost management strategies, analyzing financial and cost engineering data, change management and working collaboratively with various departments to drive accurate, consistent reporting and analysis targeting cost reduction and efficiency initiatives. Your expertise will contribute to the overall profitability and competitiveness of our Project and organization.

Project Controls Team has multiple locations possible: Austin, TX; Sparks, NV; Los Angels, CA; San Jose, CA


What You'll Do
  • Establish and execute a comprehensive cost management program for Self-Perform energy projects across Megapack, Solar, Supercharger, and Semi Charger deployments, including cost tracking, forecasting, variance analysis, and cost reduction initiatives. Analyze historical project data to develop cost trends and benchmarks that enable data-driven decision-making for current and future Tesla energy installations
  • Lead competitive market analysis comparing Tesla's Self-Perform construction costs against third-party contractor as-builds across North America, quantifying in-house cost savings and demonstrating the operational and financial advantages of Tesla's Self-Perform model
  • Build and maintain executive-level cost dashboards that provide real-time visibility into project economics, Self-Perform ROI, and key performance indicators across Tesla's energy portfolio
  • Deliver accurate cost forecasts for ongoing projects to ensure alignment with capital deployment goals and financial targets. Utilize cost data and trends to predict potential cost overruns or savings opportunities and provide actionable recommendations for mitigation strategies
  • Partner with project managers and regional managers to implement robust cost controls and monitor actual costs against approved budgets. Conduct variance analysis and provide corrective action recommendations to ensure budgets are adhered to and financial goals are met
  • Develop and execute a structured cost reporting plan including bi-weekly operational reviews and quarterly executive presentations. Proactively communicate cost trends, risks, and opportunities to cross-functional project teams and senior leadership while ensuring compliance with financial regulations and industry standards
  • Drive continuous improvement by staying current with emerging cost management technologies and construction industry best practices. Champion cost control methodologies and process improvements that scale with Tesla's rapid energy infrastructure growth

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or equivalent experience
  • Experience (typically 5+ years) in cost management, budgeting, and forecast analysis, ideally in the complex industrial process industry
  • Strong knowledge cost management processes and cost structures
  • Proficiency in financial modeling and cost analysis tools
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments, in ambiguous environments
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail. Agile in learning and utilizing new software
  • Use PowerBI dashboards to report to executive management

    Expected Compensation
    $96,000 - $306,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
