Description

As the Assistant Director of Accounting, you will support the Director of Accounting in overseeing (1) the Company's internal (management) and external (SEC) financial reporting activities; (2) the monthly closing and consolidation processes; (3) various corporate accounting functions including impairment, accounts receivable, accounts payable, equity, lease accounting, general accounting and eliminations; (4) various audits; (5) ongoing compliance with GAAP, including technical research and memo documentation.

Work Performed:



  • Oversee the preparation and review of company financial reports including SEC filings (10-Q/10-K/8-K/Proxy/S-4/S-8/Forms 4 and 5 filings, etc.) for accuracy and clarity; ensure proper documentation and supporting workpapers are maintained for such reports and filings.
  • Provide management with timely review of company financial results, and manage both internal and external financial reporting, including reports required by regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate month-end and year-end closing process with all accounting groups, including review of equity pick and elimination/consolidation entries.
  • Execute quarterly impairment testing for buildings, land, joint ventures and predevelopment by working closely with SVP of Investments and Finance Manager.
  • Manage the Accounts Receivable team, including preparation of the monthly AR Watchlist, assessing the creditworthiness of customers for both new deals and renewals, assisting in monthly A/R close process, preparation of quarterly and ad-hoc executive materials, and collaborating with legal department on any customer bankruptcies.
  • Manage the Accounts Payable team, including driving ongoing process improvements (i.e. automation efforts), maintaining relationship with Nexus contacts, overseeing annual 1099 process, and overseeing annual vendor cleanup project.
  • Review information related to the Company's equity accounting, including the quarterly equity roll forward, restricted stock grants and vestings, share/unit count tracking, ATM issuances, and dividend payments.
  • Establish and maintain sound internal controls and policies and procedures in the corporate accounting and financial reporting areas with specific emphasis on Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for the Company's various audits, including consolidated, several joint ventures, insurance, and internal audits of various processes.
  • Collaborate with other groups (e.g. Property Accounting, Asset Management, Legal and Tax) regarding their compliance with GAAP and their communication of relevant information to Corporate Accounting.
  • Perform technical accounting research for various issues and transactions that arise and memorializing the accounting conclusion in memo format.


Perform other duties as assigned by the Accounting Director, such as:



  • Straight line rent review and integrity.
  • Strategic tasks related to asset management, forecasting, and/or budgeting.
  • Implementation of newly adopted accounting pronouncements.
  • Ad hoc accounting analysis and GAAP compliance research related to transactions and as requested by executive management.


Job Requirements:



  • Strong leadership skills to effectively manage 4+ direct reports.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple items during peak periods.
  • Integrity as to financial reporting, confidentiality of information.
  • Management experience, high energy level, and strong work ethic.


Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of related accounting experience required. Knowledge of US GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements is a must. CPA strongly desired. Public accounting experience strongly preferred. Experience in the real estate industry strongly preferred.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
