Job title: VDC Manager

Department: Virtual Design & Construction (VDC)

Job Location: New York, NY

Reports to: VDC Department Manager

Structure Tone, part of the STO Building Group is seeking a VDC Manager to lead the department's core service lines within the Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) organization. This leadership position is responsible for the operational success, technical excellence, and strategic growth of a dedicated VDC discipline such as BIM Coordination, Visualization, Reality Capture, Digital Construction, and Emerging Technologies.

The VDC Manager provides leadership for a team of VDC Specialists and Senior Specialists while ensuring consistent delivery of high-quality services across multiple projects. This role is accountable for resource planning, staff development, operational performance, utilization, quality assurance, and continuous improvement of departmental workflows.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a passion for developing people while advancing innovative digital construction solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Department Leadership
  • Lead a designated VDC service line and establish consistent standards, workflows, and best practices.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop VDC personnel including Specialists and Senior Specialists.
  • Conduct performance reviews, career development planning, coaching, and ongoing feedback.
  • Support recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and succession planning.
  • Foster a collaborative, innovative, and high-performing team culture.

Resource Management
  • Manage resource planning and staff assignments across multiple projects.
  • Balance workload, staffing levels, and utilization to maximize department efficiency.
  • Coordinate project assignments based on technical expertise, project complexity, and business priorities.
  • Forecast staffing needs and identify future hiring requirements.
Operations & Quality
  • Ensure consistent execution of departmental standards, QA/QC procedures, and project delivery workflows.
  • Monitor project performance, quality metrics, and client satisfaction.
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and consistency.
  • Establish standard operating procedures and maintain departmental documentation.

Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical oversight and subject matter expertise for assigned service line.
  • Support complex project challenges and assist project teams with technical issue resolution.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies, workflows, and industry best practices.
  • Promote standardization and scalability across projects.

Training & Development
  • Develop technical training programs for VDC staff.
  • Identify skill gaps and coordinate professional development opportunities.
  • Mentor team members toward increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Promote knowledge sharing across the department.

Business Support
  • Support pursuit efforts through technical presentations, visualization, demonstrations, and client interviews as needed.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Preconstruction, Marketing, and Business Development teams.
  • Assist in developing service offerings, departmental standards, and strategic initiatives.

Leadership Expectations

Qualifications

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in VDC, BIM, Architecture, Engineering, or Construction.
  • 5+ years leading multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Previous personnel management experience preferred.

Technical Skills

Strong working knowledge of:

  • Autodesk Revit
  • Navisworks Manage
  • Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC)
  • Revizto
  • AutoCAD
  • Reality Capture workflows (preferred)
  • Visualization software (Enscape, Twinmotion, Lumion, D5, V-Ray) depending on service line
  • Microsoft Office Suite

Compensation

Salary Range: $165,000 - $185,000

Commensurate with experience, particularly in complex MEP coordination and mission critical/data center projects.

Additional Compensation:

Eligible for discretionary bonus based on company and individual performance.
