The Product Compliance Engineer is responsible for product regulatory testing, records, and audits in support of recognized certifications such as CE, FDA/CDRH, and EN/IEC to ensure nLIGHT products are safe and conform to international regulatory, customer, and company requirements. This requires knowledge of the regulatory requirements from around the US and world and leadership within the organization to maintain an effective compliance program.
The qualified candidate will apply their product safety, electrical, mechanical, RF, and optical engineering expertise and knowledge of international regulations and testing ensure nLIGHT's products are designed and tested to conform with applicable regulatory and company requirements.
Responsibilities:
  • Provides expert product safety technical guidance and serves as the technical resource.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to develop and provide effective processes, procedures, and methods to ensure that nLIGHT can sustain product compliance across the organization.
  • Maintain knowledge and application of the international regulations, standards, requirements, and certifications that apply to nLIGHT products.
  • Reviews, conducts, or participates in investigations and root cause analysis of product safety-related events.
  • Monitors, interprets, and reports status on existing and emerging global requirements with potential to impact nLIGHT products, and effectively communicates those impacts within nLIGHT and assists in the development and implementation of new or modified business processes and strategies to address new requirements.
  • Supports internal and external testing for EMI and EMC testing.
  • Translates regulatory requirements from around the world to actions within the organization.
  • Establishes, documents, implements, and maintains program for regulatory compliance processes to ensure alignment with the EU, UK, China, US, and any other country the products ship to.
  • Assists in the development, review and maintenance of policies, procedures, SOPs and workflows.
  • Establishes, monitors, and reports relevant metrics/KPI's.
  • Prepares written reports, exposure/hazard/risk assessments, and technical papers.
  • Manages the compliance for CE which includes the Low Voltage Directive, EMC Directive, RoHS Directive, and Machinery Directive.
  • Creates Declarations of Conformance for CE.
  • Creates and maintains Technical Files to support CE Marking and FDA/CDRH.
  • Reports to the FDA/CDRH new products containing lasers and any reporting requirements.
  • Interfaces with NRTL for safety testing in accordance with EN 61010.
  • Manages database collecting supplier certifications for RoHS, REACH, Conflict Minerals, PFAS, POP, Prop 65, WEEE, etc.
  • Supports customer surveys and product declarations for regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures product markings meet the regulatory requirements.
  • Completes actions needed for New Product Introductions (NPI) around compliance.
  • Supports data collection and reporting for unique regulatory requirements as they arise.
Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of previous experience working as a Product Compliance or Safety Engineer, and a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, Math, or Statistics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of regulations and test methodologies applicable to nLIGHT's products, such as IEC 61010, EU 2015/863, and EC 1907/2006 or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot complex technical and regulatory problems, consult with relevant stakeholders, and propose practical solutions.
  • Ability to work with engineering to devise test plans and preparation of samples for testing.
  • Ability to work and interface as lead with 3rd party testing facilities to coordinate and execute product testing.
  • Ability to organize and maintain declarations of conformity, technical construction files, and test reports.
  • Ability to apply hazard/risk analysis, to identify compliance deficiencies, opportunities to improve product safety and/or quality; effectively document, communicate and track results to resolution.
  • Ability to work/communicate effectively with engineers, technical specialists, and management, cross functionally, in a multi-disciplinary environment; comfortable interacting with regulators, outside agencies, industry trade groups/associations, and customers as required.
  • Strong written/verbal/communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and project management skills.
Desired Skills:
  • 5 years working with EN 61010.
  • 5 years working with EN 60825.
  • 5 years working with EN 61000.
  • Ability to audit internal processes for conformance to requirements

Salarylevel based on experience, education, and skills:

  • Product Compliance Engineer II: $87,000 - $99,000
  • Sr Product Compliance Engineer III: $100,000 - $125,000
