Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
The Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, invites applicants to apply for a part-time, teacher-clinician; 0.5 to 2 days per week, 40 weeks per year.

The department is responsible for teaching pediatric dentistry at the pre-doctoral level. Teaching is done in a humanistic manner, such that students are enthusiastic about providing oral healthcare to children and inspired by the professionalism, expertise, and demeanor of the departmental faculty and staff. Additionally, the school's dental auxiliary utilization ( DAU) program is part of the department, and is taught concurrently with pediatric dentistry both pre-clinically and in the pediatric clinic.

In addition to the formal curriculum, the department is active in community outreach activities, and independently as well as in conjunction with the student-organized outreach group ( SCOPE), organizes, coordinates and provides outreach activities to the children of the community.

Department faculty members are integral in all activities of the department, and teach the students in all areas by instruction and also by example.

Responsibilities may include any of the following:

  • Preclinical instruction
  • Clinical instruction
  • Specialty Preparatory Activities
  • Teaching activities in interdisciplinary courses and other departments in the school

These activities are assigned by the Department Chair in consultation with the individual faculty member.

Workload:
Because Pediatric Dentistry is a small department, with extensive commitments within the school, workload varies quarter to quarter. Specific workload and scheduling will be adjusted based on the faculty member's as well as the department's needs.

For part-time faculty in the teacher-clinician track, emphasis is placed on teaching activities, but participation in scholarship and service is encouraged.

  • Current, active license to practice dentistry
  • Valid CPR certification

Preferred Qualifications
Education:

  • Board certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry is desirable, but not required

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with a diverse population of patients, students, staff, faculty and administration
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Work effectively as a team with administrators, faculty, staff, and students
  • Maintain confidentiality of information
  • Demonstrate professional judgment in all situations
  • Sincere desire to learn from and to teach students in all phases of the curriculum, using a humanistic educational model
  • Sincere desire for personal growth and development as an educator
  • Involvement or desire to be involved in organized dentistry, especially organized pediatric dentistry
