Job Summary

This position is eligible for a $6,000 hiring bonus in accordance with the County's Hiring and Retention Bonus Program.

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner practices with autonomy and independence within the scope of the medical license and under the general direction of the designated supervisor to provide direct diagnostic, preventive and treatment services to youth who are at risk or have serious emotional disturbance, individuals with substance use disorders, and/or adults with serious mental illness.
In this role, you will:

  • Conduct diagnostic evaluations, screen to ascertain risk level to self/others, complete comprehensive assessments to determine the intensity, frequency, and duration of psychiatric interventions.
  • Prescribe and administer psychiatric medication; provide complex medical decision-making, reconcile medication at times of hospital discharge, and order/review necessary physical exams and laboratory results.
  • Consult with psychiatrists and community primary care physicians and serve as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team including nurses, care coordinators, clinicians, and other service providers as needed.
  • Be responsible for coordinating and providing psychiatric services including engagement, assessment and diagnoses, treatment planning, medication management, and discharge planning for individuals with psychiatric conditions.
  • Apply knowledge of various treatment modalities including psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and crisis stabilization.
  • Enter and maintain clinical documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) achieving measures for meaningful use and promoting primary and behavioral healthcare.
  • Comply with departmental policies and procedures; provide professional medical insight during reviews of policies and procedures as needed.
  • This position normally has no administrative supervisory responsibilities but may provide clinical supervision and/or oversee the work of nurse practitioners, students, or interns.
  • Be able to implement crisis prevention techniques including physical restraints, perform CPR, and administer first aid.
The primary work locations include the Leesburg and Eastern Loudoun office sites. Additional compensation is provided for the on-call schedule, generally one week every 4-5 weeks for evening and weekend hours. There may also be an occasion that requires availability after business hours for case-specific consultation.
May be eligible for telework for pre-arranged and approved hours according to the Loudoun County Telework policy. Telework hours must be approved by the Medical Director and are contingent on clinical needs. A telework schedule is not guaranteed.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in advanced practice nursing

Preferred Qualifications
  • License for autonomous practice in Virginia is preferred but will consider applicants who require a Physician Practice Agreement with MHSADS.
  • Previous experience working as a Psychiatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
  • Previous experience working as a psychiatric nurse in inpatient or outpatient settings.
  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual candidates highly desirable.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Special Requirements:

  • Must have Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Certification and current license as a Nurse Practitioner in Virginia. Board Certified by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Must have DEA Registration and State Controlled Substance License II-V. NPI number.
  • Physician Practice Agreement with MHSADS Prescriber or License for Autonomous Practice in Virginia.
  • Certification as an Independent Evaluator for civil commitment hearings as required per Virginia Code is preferred within one year of hire.
  • Must be fitted for N-95 (or similar) mask to safely provide on-site services as needed.
  • Must be available for duty beyond normal workday as required to perform functions of position for assigned department. Participates in the on-call rotation to ensure that Department staff may consult with a prescriber 24/7.
  • Must be able to work in program defined settings, including CIT Assessment Center, group homes, Adult Detention Center, Youth Shelter, schools, hospitals, shelters, and other community settings.
Post Conditional Offer Contingencies:
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check, credit check, driving record check, and negative TB screen/test. Must have a valid driver's license in Virginia or regional state of residence.
